Cuban Ambassador Visits Tūranga Library in Christchurch and Explores Opportunities for Cultural and Community Cooperation

Christchurch, 27 May 2025 – As part of his official visit to the city of Christchurch, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to New Zealand, Luis Ernesto Morejón Rodríguez, held a meaningful meeting with senior staff at Tūranga Library, the city’s central public library.

The discussion focused on the role of public libraries as vibrant spaces for access to knowledge, cultural diversity, and civic engagement. Both sides acknowledged the value of promoting mutual understanding through cultural activities, literary exhibitions, and spaces for dialogue around history and identity.

The Ambassador expressed Cuba’s interest in exploring potential areas of collaboration with the library, particularly in promoting Cuban literature and film, and in cultural initiatives that engage local communities, including youth and diverse audiences.

Tūranga Library representatives showed strong interest in strengthening the international scope of their community work and welcomed the idea of future collaborations that bring Latin American and Caribbean content into their cultural programming.
