Wellington, April 23, 2025 — In a gesture of deep respect and sorrow, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in New Zealand, Luis Ernesto Morejón Rodríguez, signed today the book of condolences opened at the Apostolic Nunciature in Wellington, following the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis.
During his message, the Ambassador recalled with emotion the words of the Pontiff: “I have great affection for the Cuban people... Cuba is a symbol. Cuba has a great history.” These heartfelt expressions remain deeply cherished by the Cuban people, as are his visits to the island and the messages of tenderness and hope he conveyed to our nation.
“We will fondly remember his visits to Cuba and the words of affection he dedicated to our country in his messages,” said the Cuban diplomat.
Through its President, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, the Government of the Republic of Cuba has declared an Official Mourning Period from 6:00 a.m. on April 22 to midnight on April 24, 2025. During this time, flags will be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect and reflection.
The Embassy of Cuba in New Zealand extends our deepest sympathies to his family and the global Catholic community at the loss of an exceptional figure — a symbol of humility, justice, and dialogue.
