Wellington, October 5th, 2017. On Thursday night, Cuban Ambassador Mario Alzugaray gave a presentation about Cuba at the Kapiti Rotary Club, where he was able to provide details on his country's history and prospects for economic and social development.
Information was provided on the background and current developments of Cuba – US relations, highlighting traditional ambition from the northern neighbor to control the island, which led to the frustration of independence more than a century ago. Details on the persistence and impact of the economic, commercial and financial embargo was also explained.
The Cuban diplomat updated those present regarding the alleged attacks on US diplomats in Havana, a matter on which Washington has been attacking its country in an unfounded way and with obvious political intentions.
Ambassador Alzugaray commented on the excellent state of relations with New Zealand, emphasizing cooperation in the Pacific, coordination on multilateral issues and Cuba's interest in the New Zealand development model, with emphasis on the livestock sector, as priority attention for both parties.
