Oslo, September 14, 2023. A delegation from the Cuban Fisheries Research Center (CIP) visited Norway within the framework of the cooperation project “Production of marine fish fry in Cuba” which, under the auspices of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), promotes sustainable marine aquaculture in Cuba.
The delegation was made up of Marisela Hernández Ceballos, CIP´s deputy administrative director; Bárbaro Jaime Ceballos, deputy director for Aquaculture, and Eduardo Raúl Flores Gutiérrez, head of the project by the Cuban side. Along with them was the young researcher Amalia Sanz Llorente, who, as part of the project, carried out an intensive training that contributed to her Master's thesis in Marine Biology.
The working meeting held with the Norwegian counterparts from the Marine Research Center, the experts Bjørn Tore Lunestad, Torstein Harboe and Laurus Thor Kristjansson, allowed to review the project implementation process and the actions to be undertaken for the start-up of the fish hatchery built at the Marine Fish Farming Experimental Station located in Mariel, in the Cuban province of Artemisa.
The Cuban visitors fulfilled an extensive program in Austevoll, a municipality located in the Vestlandet region, in western Norway, which included visits to the branch there of the Marine Research Center and its research station, the fish feed center of Lerøy seafood company and the school where specialties linked to fishing and aquaculture are studied.
In addition, they went to Bergen, where they visited University facilities, as well as the headquarters of the Norwegian Center for Marine Research.
The Cuban ambassador to Norway, Maité Rivero Torres, accompanied the delegation in these activities. Sigurd Kihl, from NORAD, was also present. (Embassy of Cuba in Norway)
