The Cuban delegation takes part in the interactive dialogue with the working group on discrimination against women and girls. 56th session of the Human Rights Council.

Mr. Chairman,

We welcome the members of the working group and take note of their report.

We appreciate the progress and legislative changes made at global level in the area of equality between women and men, to which the political will of States, United Nations mechanisms and civil society organisations have made a significant contribution. At the same time, we recognise that challenges remain.

Mr President,

Cuba's Constitution strengthens the protection of women, equal rights and responsibilities in all areas and guarantees the exercise of their sexual and reproductive rights without discrimination. It protects them from gender-based violence and promotes their integral development and full participation.

We highlight the National Programme for the Advancement of Women, which constitutes the Cuban State's agenda for the development of policies in favour of women and gender equality.

Aware of the continuing challenges, in June 2023 the Gender Equality Observatory was launched to strengthen the gender approach in the construction of indicators and the collection of statistics and, at the same time, to enable comprehensive quantitative and qualitative analyses of gender equality and the empowerment of women in the country.

Thank you for your attention.
