The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Abelardo Moreno, addressed today to representatives of the national and foreign press the key elements of the draft resolution 70/5 that Cuba will present on Wednesday October 26 at the United Nations General Assembly, entitled "Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba ". At the meeting, the Cuban deputy minister stressed that the main objective of this document is implicit in the title itself: the need to end this outdated policy and violates international law. Among the main issues, said Moreno, is the complaint to the extraterritorial nature of the blockade. This measure, he said, not only affects Cuba but also third countries and institutions and hampering economic, commercial and financial relations among nations.
In the project, the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, which are violated by this unilateral policy was reiterated. In addition, the principles of equality policy states ratified, noninterference in internal affairs and freedom of trade. The text also refers to the increasing international rejection of this policy and the successive statements of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean (ECLAC) and other international forums against the blockade mentioned.
At the meeting it transpired that among the provisions proposed by Cuba is the call to lift all extraterritorial measures and to meet its obligations to the purposes and principles of the United Nations. In this sense, the draft resolution urges States that apply this type of unilateral measure to take the necessary steps to repeal, in clear reference to the United States.
The document welcomes the progress of relations between Cuba and the United States from 17 December 2014. It also recognizes repeated by President Obama will work towards the elimination of the blockade and notes the measures taken, which are considered positive, although limited. However, said Cuban Vice Minister, the blockade continues and affects the Cuban population in general. For this reason, he concluded, as long as the blockade, Cuba will continue to present the resolution against this policy to the United Nations.
