Letter to the Left Alliance for National Democracy and Socialism on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the creation of the organization and the celebration of its Fifth Annual Congress

Dear Comrades of Jamaica LANDS:

On behalf of the Cuban Embassy and on my own behalf, I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the creation of your organization and the celebration of your Fifth Annual Congress.

Since its foundation on 11 November 2016, the Left Alliance for National Democracy and Socialism (LANDS) has slowly but steadily made a name for itself in the political arena of the island. The inclusion of LANDS’ recommendations in the final version of the Sexual Harassment Act of 2021 is but the latest example of the influence and the serious work of the organization towards a better Jamaica.

In a world where everything that “smells” of socialism is frowned upon, LANDS shows that the ideals of social justice and inclusive development are strongly intertwined with democracy and people’s control over the actions of the State.

Cuba appreciates LANDS’ unwavering solidarity and support in its fight for the lifting of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade, and for the return of the territory illegally occupied by the US Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay.

This year, amidst a fierce media and political campaign against our country orchestrated from the US, LANDS’ leaders and members stood firm by Cuba. They not only denounced the actions non conventional warfare waged against our nation but also mobilized to protect the integrity of our diplomatic representation and personnel against the provocations and threats of the enemies of the Revolution. Our people don’t forget those who lend them a hand in times of need.

May the Fifth Annual Congress be a moment of strengthening and growing for LANDS. Your high levels of commitment, motivation and organization distinguish you and will allow you to be ever more effective in attaining your goals of making Jamaica a better place for all.

Yours sincerely,

Mr. Ulises Calvo Borges
