Malaysia celebrates its National Day on August 31st, having achieved independence from British colonialism in 1957.
The main event is the National Day Parade, which includes demonstrations by the armed forces, a parade of representatives from the country's various productive sectors, performances by music bands, and allegorical dances.
In August, cities and towns are adorned with the Jalur Gemilang (Malaysia's national flag), and cultural activities and exhibitions are held to highlight Malaysia's multicultural heritage.
