Cuban Foreign Minister sends condolences on the death of Mohammad Barkindo.

Nigeria, July 7, 2022. The member of the Political Bureau of the Party and Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, sent, through Twitter, heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian people and government for the sudden death of the director general of the Organization of Exporting Countries of Oil (OPEC), Mohammad Barkindo, this Tuesday, at the age of 63.

News of his death came just hours after a meeting in Abuja with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who had highlighted his work at OPEC.

Among Barkindo's functions was facilitating discussions between oil-exporting countries. During his leadership, nations of this organization of 13 producing countries joined ten other exporters, including Russia, to create the OPEC bloc that has been meeting since 2016 to regulate crude oil prices.

Born in April 1959 in Adamawa state, northeastern Nigeria, Barkindo took over as OPEC secretary general in 2016. He was scheduled to end his term this July.

The Cuban Embassy in Nigeria also conveyed condolences to the Nigerian authorities.
