Nairobi, May 13. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, H.E. Mr. Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla sent a message of condolences to the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya, HE. Mrs. Raychelle Omamo, on the occasion of the human losses and material damage caused by the intense rains that have occurred in recent days in this East African country.
The message of the Cuban Foreign Minister to his Kenyan counterpart, which also extends to the families of the victims, is motivated by the devastation caused by the rains in several Kenyan counties which has destroyed the lives of hundreds of people, in addition to causing considerable material damage and internal displacement.
Heavy rains have continued to occasion floods in several parts of Kenya, leaving a trail of death, misery and destruction in their wake. Flood waters have washed away roads, homes and even submerged crops, endangering the food security of many families.
The Kenyan Government has called on people living in flood-prone areas to relocate, as more rains are expected in May and June. Water levels in lakes across the country have increased significantly. Lake Victoria, for example, exhibits the highest volume of water recorded since 1958.
