Cuban Parliament elects former tourism minister as prime minister

Havana, December 21, 2019. Manuel Marrero was elected Cuba's prime minister by the National Assembly of the People's Power on Saturday, so he will be the head of Government for the next five years.

Marrero had been proposed by President Miguel Diaz-Canel as established by the Constitution proclaimed in April.

In his proposal, Diaz-Canel highlighted Marrero's excellent work at the helm of the Ministry of Tourism, as well as his honesty and dedication.

Marrero, an architect by profession, meets the constitutional requirements for that responsibility: he is a lawmaker, over 35 years of age, entitled to civil and political rights, a Cuban citizen by birth and he has no other nationality.

It is a post that returns and that was held by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, from February 1959 to December 1976.

The prime minister will be in office for a five-year period and is responsible before Parliament and the president of the Republic, to whom he renders accounts and reports on his/her performance, of the work of the Council of Ministers and its Executive Committee, when indicated.
