New York, 26 October 2020. Miguel M. Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, President of the Republic of Cuba, participated today in the opening ceremony of the thirty-eighth session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), virtually held from today to 28 October.
Cuba held ECLAC´s presidency since May 2018 up to date, when it was passed to Costa Rica. The island is a founding member of ECLAC since its establishment in 1948.
Additional participants included Carlos Alvarado, President of Costa Rica and António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations; as well as Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of ECLAC; Angel Gurría, Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In the meeting, held under Costa Rica´s presidency pro tempore of ECLAC, which will bring together representatives from the 46 member countries and 14 associate members, ECLAC accounted for the activities of the organization in the 2018-2020 period. Likewise, the priorities of the sustainable development agenda in the region in a scenario characterized by the crisis prompted by the COVID-19 were addressed.
