Cuba’s Ambassador to Grenada, Yadirys Echenique Paz, and Consul Ariel Pazos Ortiz participated in a tribute honoring the memory of Maurice Bishop held at Fort St. George, the site identified as the place where the leader of the Grenadian Revolution and several members of his cabinet were killed in October 1983. The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the Cuban state mission and members of the Cuban community residing in the country.
During the event, participants paid tribute to a figure who played a fundamental role in Grenada’s contemporary history and was one of the principal architects of the friendship and cooperative ties between Grenada and Cuba. The gathering provided an opportunity to honor his political legacy and reaffirm the values of sovereignty, social justice, and solidarity that he championed throughout his life.
The Cuban delegation laid a floral wreath and joined the commemorative activities held in remembrance of Bishop and his fallen comrades. Participants recalled the deep friendship that united the Grenadian leader with the Cuban people and highlighted the enduring relevance of the ideals that inspired cooperation between the two Caribbean nations.
Maurice Bishop led the Grenadian Revolution, which began in March 1979, and promoted a close relationship with Cuba based on cooperation for development and Caribbean integration. During those years, several significant joint projects were undertaken, including the construction of Point Salines International Airport, now known as Maurice Bishop International Airport, a lasting symbol of friendship between the two peoples.
