Accra, 31 March 2024. - The Cuban State Mission in Ghana found a way to uplift the youthful spirit of its members in view of celebrating another anniversary of the Jose Martí Students Organization (OPJM) and the Young Communist League (UJC) organisations. This time, all members of #TeamCubaGhana came together to play a friendly baseball game against the graduates in Cuba as a prelude to the final game to be held on May 11 to honour mothers in their special date.
The Cuban graduates involved in the game thanked the Government of Cuba for preparing them in all aspects of their lives, as they were not only trained professionally, but also learned to love sports, especially baseball.
#TeamCubaGhana, the State Mission team, won the game with a score of 24 to 4. Even so, the captain of the winners, Second Secretary Yamil Martinez Marrero, said that there were no winners or losers, but that good relations between the two countries, solidarity and Cuban sport triumphed.
Antonio Julián Menéndez de la Fuente, from the secretariat of the Mission's base cell of the Cuban Communist Party, said that the game had been a timely opportunity to recall his childhood in the largest of the Antilles, enjoying something that unites, the national sport. He acknowledged that Sport plays a fundamental role in Cuban society, especially because it is considered a right of the people.
Hugo Banzini, captain of the Cuban graduates' team, thanked for the invitation to practice. He was happy to have felt young again and that the game reminded them of their time on the island. Paraphrasing Revolution’s Commander Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán, he assured that they would never play against their Cuban brothers, even though they would have had to play in different teams now.
This year 2024 is the 65th Anniversary of the establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Cuba and Ghana and different events are planned to celebrate this important Anniversary.
