The celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution was held in Ghana in Political and Cultural event organized jointly by the Association of Ghanaians Graduates in Cuba (ESBECAN) and the Cuban embassy, which also included the participation of members of the Cuban Medical Brigade, personalities and representatives of organizations integrating the campaign of solidarity with Cuba, as well as Cubans residing in the country.
The Deputy Minister for Health, Hon. Kingsley Aboagye-Gyedu, who represented the government, congratulated Cuba on its 60 years of revolution. He also highlighted the upward state of relations between both countries and governments, as an example of the quality of the preparation of Ghanaians who study medicine in Cuba and who will conclude their studies in 2019. He added that it is the interest of his Government to strengthen economic and commercial relations with the Caribbean island.
The first Vice-president of the Trades Union Congress of Ghana (TUC), Mr. Alexander Nyarko-Opoku, also used the floor to say that the relations between the Ghanaians and Cuban workers have been strengthened, he said that his organization will be again present in the festivities for the May Day in Cuba; former Ambassador Kojo Owusu Gyamadua Amoo Gottfreid referred to his diplomatic work in Cuba, and to the beginnings of cooperation in training qualified personnel, the most evident of which are the Ghanaian graduates; the leader of the Socialist Forum of Ghana (SFG), Mr. Kwesi Pratt Jr. paid tribute to the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro, and to the Cuban internationalist combatants in Africa, after acknowledging the presence in Ghana of the Cuban Medical Brigade, on behalf of those present, ratified the commitment of the Ghanaian people to maintain solidarity with Cuba, especially in the struggle to lift the blockade.
Other personalities who attended were the Director of International Relations of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and coordinator of the Solidarity Campaign with Cuba, Hon. Kofi Attor; the Member of Parliament by the NDC, Hon. Samuel Okutzeto Ablakwa; and the female organizer of the NDC, Dr. Hanna Bissiw.
The Cuban ambassador, Pedro Luis Despaigne González, made a recount of Cuba's achievements in the year that ended, emphasized the importance of the 1st. January for Cuba and Ghana, especially because bilateral diplomatic relations will reach the 60th anniversary in 2019. He thanked the Government and the people of Ghana for supporting Cuba in its historic battle against the blockade, and ratified Cuba's commitment to strengthen cooperation towards other areas, and announced that a comprehensive programme would be implemented to commemorate the six decades.
