Kingston, 19 April 2023. Members of the Cuban State Mission in Jamaica, members of the Association of Cuban Residents in Jamaica "Antonio Maceo" (ACRJ), the Cuba Solidarity Movement and youth organisations and social movements gathered at the headquarters of the Cuban Embassy in Jamaica to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the victory of Playa Giron, the first defeat of Yankee imperialism in Latin America. The event was attended by Senator Gabriela Morris, president of the People's National Party Youth Organisation (PNPYO) and José Antonio Sánchez-Vega, Chargé d'Affaires of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
Osvaldo Cárdenas, president of the ACRJ, analysed the main factors that led to the mercenary invasion of Playa Girón and which subsequently made the triumph of the Cuban forces possible.
The president of the Jamaica-Cuba Friendship Association (JCFA), Trevor Brown, acknowledged the courage of the Cuban people, led by our Commander-in-Chief, during the actions at Playa Giron, demonstrating to oppressed nations that a better world is possible. He also reiterated that the Jamaican people would continue to resist alongside their Cuban brothers and sisters the continued aggressions of the US government and denounce the impact of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against our country.
In his remarks to those present, Cuban Ambassador Fermín Quiñones Sánchez congratulated on behalf of the mission comrade Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez on his re-election as President of the Republic of Cuba at the constitutive session of the 10th Legislature of the National Assembly of People's Power. He reiterated our nation's decision to continue defending the "Revolution of the humble, by the humble and for the humble" at the price of any sacrifice.
As part of the activity, collaborators declaimed the poem "Elegía de los zapaticos blancos", written by Indio Naborí and a version of the song "Playa Girón", written by Silvio Rodríguez.
