Oslo, September 18th, 2022. After the official constitution of the electoral bureau and the signing by its members of the corresponding oath, at 07:00 a.m., the polling station at the Embassy of Cuba in Norway opened for the referendum on the new Family Code.
There, all members of the staff of the Diplomatic Mission cast their votes, as well as a group of co-nationals who are in this country fulfilling official missions. Neisi Mena López had the honor of being the first to exercise the right to suffrage.
Once the last voter deposited his ballot, the President of the electoral bureau declared the voting closed, after which the ballot box was opened and the count was carried out, ensuring the principles and ethics that govern the Cuban electoral system.
It was a day of patriotism and commitment to the future of the country, which concluded with words of appreciation for the successful development of the process, by the ambassador Maité Rivero Torres, in her capacity as President of the Electoral Commission of the Embassy.
It was a source of pride for these Cubans to have the opportunity to express their will in this popular exercise of great importance for the Nation, which will culminate next Sunday, September 25, with the holding of the referendum in Cuba.
The Family Code is, undoubtedly, one of the legal norms that have had more social and political impact in the legal history of the country because it not only deals with the constitutional rights in family and other related matters, but also responds to the international commitments assumed by Cuba as signatory of human rights treaties such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in 1979; the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989; and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2006, whose values and principles are included in the Code.
