At Cuba’s initiative, the Human Rights Council renews mechanism to protect the rights of peasants.

Geneva, 5 October. The Human Rights Council today adopted a resolution proposed by Cuba, together with other countries, renewing for three years the mandate of the Working Group on the rights of peasants and other people working in rural areas.

During the debate on the proposal, Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Verson highlighted the importance of the Working Group in disseminating and ensuring the effective implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2018.

The Cuban representative stressed that the Working Group is the only mechanism available to the Council to promote the rights of peasants, including better working conditions, quality of life, and labour and social protection.

The Working Group has demonstrated its relevance in identifying good practices and lessons learned, and has supported States’ efforts through concrete cooperation, technical assistance and capacity-building activities.

“Cuba will continue to support the legitimate rights of peasants and other people working in rural areas, whose contribution to global food production is decisive,” stated the Cuban Ambassador.

The initiative spearheaded by Cuba received the unanimous support of the members of the Human Rights Council.
