The Bahamas, 10 July 2019. As an expression of the strong ties in the field of culture and in the context of the 45th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and The Bahamas, four Cuban artists were invited by the government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to participate in the Cultural Gala for the 46th anniversary of the independence of this Caribbean nation.
The renowned Cuban percussionist, Eduardo Córdova Reyes, was the artist chosen to lead the tribute to Peanuts Taylor, a legend of Bahamian percussion, who just celebrated his 84th birthday. With strength, dynamism and mastery, Córdova immediately captivated those present. He received the constant acclamations for his performance. Once again Eduardo Córdova raised the name of Cuba in Bahamian lands. He reminded with his beats the influence of Afro-Cuban music in the work of the legendary Peanuts. The honoree, who during his long artistic life shared the stage with several great Cuban percussionists such as Chano Pozo and Tata Güines, and whom Córdova met about two decades ago, enjoyed this performance from the front row. In his numerous trips to Cuba, Peanuts performed at Tropicana in the 50s, developed projects with UNEAC and Turarte in the 90s and was awarded at the PerCuba Festival in 2001.
For their part, the young choreographers Tania Mesa Rodríguez, Erneris Vazquez Alvarez and Alejandro Oviedo Sierra gave a colorful dance selection with Afro-Caribbean and contemporary elements. The Cuban creators fused with local dancers during the show, in a harmonious and vibrant combination.
The event was attended by Prime Minister, Hubert A. Minnis, the Governor General, Cornelius A. Smith, members of the Cabinet, personalities from various sectors of Bahamian society, members of the accredited Diplomatic Corps and people in general.
