The Vieux Fort Primary School was the venue this occasion for the activity in observance of the Day of Cuban Culture, organized by the Constituency Council and the Humanistic Solidarity Association (Saint Lucia – Cuba). The activity was presided over by the Cuban Ambassador, Alejandro Simancas, who addressed the origin of the Day of Culture and explained that October 20th,1868, the Cuban national anthem was sang for the first time. He stated that the lyrics of the National Anthem is the best response to those the attempts to intimidate Cuba with the reinforcement of the United States Blockade. He also explained the high level of cultural development during the Revolution due to the universal and free educational and cultural policy for all Cubans. The Cuban diplomat paid homage to one of the greatest ballet dancer of all time, Alicia Alonso, who passed away a few days ago. She holds a special place at the top of Cuban culture and made us proud with her art and her defense of our national identity. The Deputy Mayor of Vieux Fort South, Jean Claude Amedee expressed the deep appreciation and gratitude of his people to Cuba for the support and contribution to their social development. He categorized Cuba an example and friendly country. Also present were the President of the Association, Marlene Alexander and the person responsible for the South Committee, Tedburt Theobalds. Also in attendance were members from the community, among them outstanding artists like the writers Anderson Reynolds and Modest Downs, who presented their literary pieces. Also performing was the Claralites Folk Dance Troupe who displayed the island’s Quadrille Dance traditions. For the Cuban part, also in attendance was a representation of Cuban Collaborators working in Saint Lucia who sang the notes of the National Anthem exactly as the people of Bayamo city did 151 years ago.
