Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba hold conversations with Chancellor of Jamaica

Kingston, Jamaica, June 14th, 2018.- The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, welcomed this Thursday afternoon, 14th June. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rogelio Sierra Diaz, who carries out a two-day visit to this Caribbean nation.

During the meeting, held at the Jamaican Chancery, both parts reviewed diverse issues from the regional and bilateral agenda, among them, the situation of the bilateral relations, the existing cooperation, in particular, in the areas of Education and Health; the efforts to increase the trade exchanges, as well as the challenges both nations face amid the new international scenario.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jamaica availed the opportunity to reiterate the appreciation of her people and Government for the cooperation Cuba offers in important areas like education and health care. Johnson Smith highlighted the presence of more than 300 Cuban collaborators who offer their labour all over Jamaica.

Likewise, the Jamaican official appealed to continue with the efforts to increase the trade exchanges and stressed the potential both nations have and the existence of legal and cooperation instruments that will ease the export and imports from one and another country for the benefit of the two peoples.

Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister praised the permanent and historic support of Jamaica to the different battles endured by Cuba, in particular, the fights against the blockade and highlighted the vote by this sister nation in favour of the different resolutions rejecting this cruel policy at United Nations General Assembly and the motions in support of the Cuban people adopted by the Parliament of Jamaica during nine consecutive years.

On the Cuban part, the meeting was also attended by the director for Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean at the Cuban Chancery, Jorge Mayo Fernández, and the Cuban Ambassador Ines Fors Fernandez. Johnson Smith was accompanied by Ambassador Marcia Gilbert Roberts, Permanent Secretary; Marsha Coore Lobban, director for Americas and the Caribbean, as well as other officials.
