New York, July 18th, 2023.- Deputy Prime Minister of Cuba and minister of Economy and Planning, Alejandro Gil Fernández, was welcomed, this afternoon, by the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Achim Steiner.
During the cordial meeting, both parts ratified the compromise to continue promoting the positive relations of cooperation between Cuba and UNDP.
Achim Steiner referred to the ties of his organization with Cuba within the framework of the compliance of the Sustainable Development Goals up to 2030, expressed in the National Plan for Economic and Social Development.
He also highlighted the active work of Cuba in the multilateral sphere and praised the leadership and ongoing efforts carried out as Chair of the Group of 77 and China.
The Deputy Prime Minister of Cuba thanked for the opportunity to hold the exchange within the context of his participation at the United Nations High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
Gil Fernández acknowledged the support by UNDP to national efforts towards development and to face the effects of Covid-19; and highlighted the assistance offered to Cuba following the Saratoga Hotel accident, the fire at Matanzas Oil Tankers Base and the devastating path of Huracane Ian.
The Cuban official was accompanied by Gerardo Peñalver Portal, first deputy minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, as well as officials from the Ministry of Economy and Planning and the Cuban Chancery.
