BANGKOK, June 5, 2017 - The Director General of the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Kanchana Patarachoke, received the Ambassador of Cuba to Thailand Héctor Conde Almeida.
In the cordial meeting, both sides stressed the good path of bilateral relations and reiterated their mutual will to continue strengthening them, with special reference to the historical significance of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries to be celebrated in May 2018.
The Cuban Ambassador thanked the Kingdom for its support for the United Nations Resolution on the need to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government against Cuba. Both sides agreed on the importance of maintaining close cooperation in the various multilateral forums.
The Director-General and the Cuban Ambassador reaffirmed the support of both countries to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, adopted in December 2015, as well as the United Nations General Assembly Resolutions on Nuclear Disarmament, in particular the efforts of the international community to achieve an instrument aimed at the prohibition and total elimination of nuclear weapons.
The exchange highlighted the good outcomes of the inter-ministerial meeting held in Havana in April 2016, as well as the progress and potential of bilateral cooperation in key sectors by promoting South-South cooperation and compliance with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The Ambassador of Cuba reiterated the invitation to the Thai Foreign Ministry to present candidates for the Carlos J. Finlay 2017 Prize in Microbiology, co-sponsored by UNESCO and Cuba.
