 Press release

Don Quixote of another world is resurrected at the

Royal Danish Theatre

On April 11, the curtain fell after the last performance of Don Quixote with the Royal Danish Ballet. At the same moment, ticket sales open for Don Quixote on the same stage in September with the Cuban National Ballet, which is visiting Denmark for the first time ever. This gives the Danish audience the opportunity to experience ballet from another world from one of the world's most legendary ballet companies.

On the same evening that the ballet Don Quixote is danced for the last time on the Royal Danish Theatre's Old Stage, tickets were put on sale for three performances of the same ballet on the same stage on the

evening of 20 and 21 September and for a matinee on 21 September. It will be a production with a ballet company from a completely different world – also when it comes to ballet. For the first time ever, the Cuban National Ballet is coming to Denmark

“Great physique and even greater emotions”

Where the recently completed Don Quixote was staged by Nikolaj Hübbe, the upcoming Don Quixote will be danced by the Cuban National Ballet in a classical production under the direction of Viengsay Valdès. It is a must see, says Nikolaj Hübbe, the Royal Danish Theatre's now former ballet master: "Don Quixote with the Cuban National Ballet is something I am really looking forward to experiencing. In the international ballet world, the Cubans distinguish themselves by maintaining their own style and method. I expect great

physicality and even greater emotions and recommend everyone to see Cuban ballet for the first time in Denmark."

There will be two evening performances on September 20 and 21, and a matinee on September 21. Lawyer and ballet aficionado Philip Maury has made the visit possible: “The goal is to give Danes access to see some of the best in ballet and experience how the passionate and expressive Cuban culture is reflected in dance. One of the many highlights will be the final pas-de-deux, which will make the roofs rise when danced by the stars of the Cuban National Ballet.”

First guest appearance in Northern Europe

The Cuban Embassy in Denmark is involved in arranging and planning the visit, which is unique not only for Denmark, but for all of Northern Europe. Ambassador Ana María Chongo Torreblanca: “The Cuban National Ballet and its reputation throughout the world are a source of pride for Cuba, and as Ambassador to Denmark, I am especially proud that Copenhagen will be the corps' first visit ever to the Nordic countries and the first in over 30 years to Northern Europe. It is a sign of the good relations between Cuba and Denmark.”

Viengsay Valdés, ballet master of the Cuban National Ballet: “Since the 1930s, we have preserved and developed the special expression for which the world knows Cuban ballet, while of course we are also

inspired by others, including the romantic Danish Bournonville. We know that the love for ballet is great in Denmark, and we look forward to dancing on the stage, where many great dancers have performed.

Tickets can be purchased via the Royal Danish Theatre’s website.
