Dublin November 15, 2018. Dr. Aleida Guevara March during her stay in Ireland held a friendly meeting with Finian McGrath, Minister of State in charge of attention to people with disabilities.
The Cuban Ambassador in Ireland, Hugo René Ramos Milanés and Silvio Platero, President of the Cuban Movement for Peace, also participated in the meeting.
During the exchange the Minister was interested in obtaining from Dra Aelida details about the attention in Cuba to children with disabilities, Aleida as a pediatrician transferred her experiences in medical care but at the same time about the differentiated education that those children receive in specialized institutions as the school "Solidarity with Panama" that was created at the request of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and who always stayed very close to this prestigious teaching institution.
The traditional Cuban medical assistance that has included 164 countries, either through government programs or assistance in situations of disasters and that has employed more than 400 thousand Cuban health professionals was another of the exchange topics, as well as training in Cuba, free of charge, more than 35 thousand health professionals from 138 countries.
Minister McGrath wanted to know how it is possible that a relatively small country like Cuba and not just rich, had reached such levels of international medical assistance. Aleida explained that in the Cuban health system, prevention and primary care are fundamental pillars. Cuba had in 1959 two universities in which medicine was studied, while today each province has its own university of medical sciences, we have the Latin American University of Medical Sciences and several municipalities have their own university headquarters. The practice of medicine is one of the professions in Cuba that has the greatest social recognition. Additionally Cuban people has developed deep feelings of solidarity.
