Cairo, October 25, 2026. More than a dozen Egyptian newspapers have reported on the press conference held on October 21 by Cuba’s ambassador, Alexander Pellicer Moraga.
The published articles reported that on October 28, Cuba will once again submit for a vote in the UN General Assembly the draft resolution calling for an end to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States. The reports also highlighted the immense damage caused by the blockade imposed on Cuba for more than six decades, which, at current prices, amounts to more than $178.7 billion. Taking into account the sharp rise in the price of gold relative to the dollar, the cumulative total amounts to more than 3.8 trillion in gold value.
The media also highlighted the damage caused to the Cuban economy between February 2025 and March 2026, amounting to more than 8 billion dollars.
The oil embargo against Cuba, in place since January of this year, was also addressed in various articles, which highlighted the immense suffering it causes the Cuban people, who endure long hours of power outages, a lack of transportation, difficulties with water supply, shortages of food and medicine, as well as major challenges to the normal operation of hospitals and polyclinics that provide free services to all Cuban citizens.
The extraterritorial nature of the blockade was also addressed in several of the articles, as demonstrated by various examples of actions taken against third-country nations and companies that have decided to withdraw from Cuba or sever ties with Cuban institutions due to intense pressure from the United States.
The Ambassador’s condemnation of the intense pressure exerted by the State Department to reduce support for the Cuban resolution against the blockade on October 28 was also reported by newspapers in the Arab country.
The Egyptian press highlighted Cuba’s gratitude to the Egyptian government for its historic support of the Cuban resolution and for its statements explaining its vote. (Embacuba Egipto)
