Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram Gate highlights Cuba's health system and denounces US campaign against Cuban medical missions

Cairo, April 20, 2025. The Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram Gate today highlighted the achievements of the Cuban health system and denounced a new US campaign against the Caribbean island's cooperation in that sector with other countries.

In an opinion article signed by prominent journalist Kamal Gaballa, the newspaper pointed out that this Latin American nation has trained and experienced personnel in the field of health and education, which “is being used in other countries in need”.

The publication criticized the recent decision of the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to suspend entry visas to the North American power to officials associated with international agreements of medical cooperation with Cuba.

He recalled that Rubio is one of the symbols of the most extremist Cuban-American community in the U.S. state of Florida.

However, Havana claims that the work of its medical teams is gaining ground in the world, providing excellent health services and saving lives, despite the arbitrary, politically motivated measures adopted by Washington, Al Ahram said.

The publication stressed that the solidarity and humanitarian contribution of thousands of Cubans working in the health field in more than 50 countries deserves recognition.

The medical programs of the Caribbean island in several latitudes are compatible with the systems and rules of the United Nations, it stressed.

The newspaper estimated that the objective of Washington's new measure is to deprive Cuba of important financial resources as a result of its medical services to third parties.

This strategy seeks to “increase economic pressure” to provoke a popular uprising against the government headed by President Miguel Díaz-Canel, it warned.

Al Ahram pointed out that Cuba's international medical cooperation programs do not contain any of the characteristics that indicate exploitation or human trafficking, one of the White House's accusations.

On the contrary, workers in the sector who provide services abroad do so voluntarily, without any type of coercion and based on bilateral cooperation agreements, he said.

None of them are unemployed on the island; in fact, once their services in other countries are finished, they will return to their original jobs, he said.

The newspaper highlighted the efforts and resources used by Havana to develop the health sector and increase the training of its professionals, which “allowed it to reach the highest rates of doctors per capita in the world”.

Instead of praising the achievements of Cuban medical cooperation, a campaign of harassment of the Caribbean island is being carried out for “unfair political reasons”, he concluded. (PL/Embacuba Egipto)
