Egyptian newspaper condemns US threats against Cuba

Cairo, January 19, 2026. The Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram today criticized US threats against Cuba, following the aggression against Venezuela and the kidnapping of its president Nicolás Maduro.

For years, officials in Washington have predicted the imminent end of the Cuban revolutionary government since its victory in 1959, which has not happened and will not happen, journalist Kamal Gaballa said in an opinion piece.

Some commentators considered the attack on Caracas to be the coup de grâce for the principles of international law, state sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs, under which the international order was founded after World War II, he noted.

The journalist emphasized that with the aggression against the South American nation, the White House is also targeting Cuba, recalling that for years the island has sent thousands of doctors to Venezuela, which, in turn, supplies oil to its neighbor.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower administration was certain that reducing Cuba's sugar quota would put an end to the Revolution, while his successor John F. Kennedy believed that covert CIA operations and an economic blockade would suffice, he stressed.

For his part, former President Lyndon Johnson believed that Latin America and Europe's adherence to the blockade would be sufficient, and George Bush thought that the collapse of the Soviet Union would achieve this goal, he noted.

Gaballa stressed that the legacy of Bolívar and Martí continues to be inspiring, and a symbol passed down from generation to generation for its values of freedom, independence, the struggle against colonialism, and the dream of unity in Latin America.

The journalist noted that, in response to threats from Washington, Cuban President Díaz-Canel described President Donald Trump's actions as state terrorism and reaffirmed that the Caribbean island is a free, independent, and sovereign country. (Embacuba Egipto/Prensa Latina)
