Kingston, Jamaica, 21 August 2020. The collective of the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Jamaica, made up of 40% women, got together this Friday to celebrate a political-cultural activity making the advent, next Sunday 23 August, of the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC).

In the activity co-chaired by the Head of the Cuban State Mission in Jamaica, Ambassador Inés Fors Fernández, and the Secretary General of the PCC grassroot at the Embassy, Bernardino Miclín Dupuy, Counsellor Ricardo Calvo acknowledged the important work that women carry out in Cuban society. He praised the way the FMC has become an obligatory reference in issues such as women’s empowerment; gender equality; promotion of legislations protecting women and family rights; as well as the key role it plays in organizing and mobilizing women for the fulfilment of strategic tasks of the Revolution, among many others. He also recalled the figure of Vilma Espín Guillois ―a fighter of the Underground Movement and the Sierra Maestra, and the eternal President of the organization―on the 90th anniversary of her birth.

An emotional moment in the activity was when, upon receiving a rose as a gift on the occasion, Yelani García Arencibia ― the youngest member of the Embassy staff ― expressed her intention to join the women's organization as she will soon reach the required age (14 years old.)
