Kingston, Jamaica, 19 May 2020. The staff of the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Jamaica commemorated on May 19 the 125th Anniversary of the falling in combat of our National Hero, the delegate of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and Major General of the Liberation Army, José Julián Martí Pérez.
Chaired by the Head of the State Mission, Ambassador Inés Fors Fernández, and attended by the staff of the diplomatic headquarters, the solemn activity took place at the Embassy premises, next to the bust of the distinguished patriot and the pole where the flag of the lone star flies.
The youngest member of the staff, the 13-year-old pioneer Yelani García Arencibia, took the floor at the ceremony, recalling the last hours of the man who, knowing that he was about to meet his death, “rushed over her with admirable recklessness and absolute renunciation.”
In the words of the young orator, although the Apostle had a presentiment - and so he had written to his mother - that his future was "like the light of the white coal, which burns to illuminate around" and that "death or isolation" would be his only prize, his heroic falling in combat, facing the sun, on the Cuban soil that he loved so much, would serve as an imperishable example for the people he helped to found, the one that today carries in its heart the doctrines of the Master.
