The Hague, 24 January 2018. The 165th anniversary of the birth of Jose Marti was celebrated by a numerous group of Dutch nationals, Cubans and Latin American diplomats accredited in the European country, in a gathering organized by the Hispanic Association of The Hague and the Embassy of Cuba in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The president of the association, Mrs edith Bergansus, spoke in her welcome words of this tradition that has brought together every January, for over 9 years, the diplomatic mission and the Association she heads, to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of the National Hero of Cuba with songs, poems, audiovisual materials that show the greatness and universality of Martí.
The Ambasador of Cuba, H.E. Mrs. Soraya Alvarez Núñez, underlined the significance of Marti's thoughts of independence, the unity of Ltin America, solidarity and humankind which are still valid these days, especially for his advocacy for world peace in the interpertation of his concept of world equilibrium. In this context, the diplomat spoke of the Jose MArti International Solidarity project, coordinated by the Office for the Marti Programme and co-sponsored by UNESCO, the Organization of IberoAmerican States for Education, Science and Culture and other international insitutions which leads to the celebration of an international conference, which fourth edition will take place between January 28 and January 31, 2019. The Ambassador explained this event is a world forum for plural thinking with a working agenda that allows to tackle the main problems of humankind from a humanistic standpoint.
Ambassador Alvarez Núñez says that January is an importan, special month for Cuba, as it is also the month in which Cuba celebrates the 59th anniversary of the triumph of the Revolution.
The program of the night included the declamation of Marti's versos sencillos by the child María Karla Pousa Pérez, the performance of the poem “Mi Caballero”, by the teenager Manuel Freyre, with musical arrangements of Osain Diez Montero, the screening of a documentary on the life and work of Jose MArti and the performance of several pieces with guitar and piano by cuban musician Jorge Martínez, in which the highlight was the performance of the emblematic “Guantanamera” with the versos sencillos penned by Jose Marti..
The activity ended with the tasting of traditional Cuban bites that were warmly welcomed by the attendees.
