Kingston, Jamaica, 8 March 2019. In a simple but cordial ceremony, the Embassy of Cuba was the venue for the celebration of International Women's Day.
Poems, flowers, postcards and allegorical messages amused an audience composed of directives of the Jamaica-Cuba Solidarity Movement, the Association of Cuban Residents in Jamaica, and representatives of the Cuban diplomatic mission.
A quotation from the Cuban National Hero, José Martí, stating that "The campaigns of the peoples are only weak, when they do not involve the heart of a woman; but when she shudders and helps; when the woman, naturally shy and quiet, encourages and applauds; when the cultured and virtuous woman anoints the work with the honey of her love, then the work becomes invincible," touched those participating in the activity, who reflected on what has been achieved, and also on the challenges that women still face in the world.
The festivities coincided with the closing of the 10th Congress of the Federation of Cuban Women, held in Havana between March 5 and 8, which served as a stage for showing the active participation of women from the largest of the Antilles in the process of updating the economic model and improving Cuban society.
In Cuba, the feminine force has remained above 37 percent of the country´s working population. Women continue to be more than 67.2 percent of professionals and technicians. Eighty-three percent of working women have graduated from higher and higher intermediate education; 53.5 percent is linked to the fields of science and technological innovation; while above 70 percent are employed in sectors like education, health and law.
