Embassy of Egypt in New Zealand Celebrates in Wellington the Inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo

Wellington, November 5, 2025.- The Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to New Zealand, H.E. George Tadros, hosted a reception in Wellington on the occasion of the official inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Cairo, one of the most ambitious cultural projects of the 21st century and a symbol of the millennial legacy of Egyptian civilization.

The event was attended by members of the diplomatic corps accredited in New Zealand, representatives of the Government, and the cultural community.

In his remarks, Ambassador Tadros highlighted that the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum represents a momentous event not only for Egypt but for all humanity, as it brings together more than one hundred thousand archaeological pieces that tell the story of one of the world’s oldest and most admired civilizations. He emphasized that this museum—considered the largest in the world dedicated to a single civilization—serves as a bridge between the past and the future and as a source of inspiration for generations to come.

Ambassador Luis Ernesto Morejón, for his part, congratulated his Egyptian counterpart on this outstanding achievement, underscoring the universal significance of Egypt’s archaeological and artistic heritage and the importance of initiatives such as this one in fostering intercultural dialogue, knowledge, and the preservation of humanity’s shared legacy.

Located beside the Giza Plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum houses for the first time the complete collection of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, along with architectural, sculptural, and artistic treasures of immeasurable value. Its modern architectural design combines technological innovation with deep respect for Egypt’s historical roots, establishing it as a global beacon of Egyptian culture and identity.

At the conclusion of the reception, Ambassador Tadros reaffirmed his country’s commitment to promoting culture, international cooperation, and the preservation of universal heritage, expressing his gratitude to the diplomatic representatives for their presence and for joining in this celebration of Egypt’s enduring spirit.
