Resolution of the UNION ASSOCIATION OF WORKERS IN LIBRARIES, STATIONERIES, PUBLISHERS AND DIGITAL MEDIA OF THE COUNCIL OF ATTICA (ATHENS - GREECE)
Since October 1960, all the governments of the United States have maintained an economic, commercial and financial blockade against the Republic of Cuba. The goal since then has been to overthrow the Cuban Revolution and return the country to Washington's domination.
In April 2019, the United States government stepped up measures against Cuba in an attempt to further strangle Cuba. These new measures include the activation of Title 3 of the Helms-Burton Act - which means that foreign entities operating in Cuba can now be sued in US courts - as well as sanctions on shipowners who transport oil from Venezuela to Cuba, restrictions on visits by US citizens to the island and restrictions on remittances sent by Cubans residing in the United States to their families in Cuba. These measures deprive the country of its development potential and are a blow to the standard of living of its people.
We demand the immediate lifting of the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba. We also demand that the European Union explicitly refuse to comply with the provisions of the blockade.
The demand to lift the US blockade has become even more urgent today, in the period we are going through, a period of global Covid-19 pandemic (with millions of cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths throughout the world). This period should be the occasion for all countries to turn to international cooperation and mutual assistance and abandon the policies of economic competition, the looting of the weak, wars and policies that ecologically strangle the planet. The peoples of the world yearn and are striving for a different course for humanity.
Cuba does not threaten any other country, on the contrary, to the best of its capacities it helps other peoples, when there is a need and it is requested. Cuban medical brigades have offered assistance and solidarity to many countries in need, and this is something we are seeing again today amid the coronavirus pandemic. The people of Cuba do not deserve such unfair and criminal treatment from their powerful neighbor, the United States. The Cuban people have the right to choose their own path, without foreign aggression, embargoes and sanctions.
