Evening of celebration of Cuban Culture Day in Jamaica.

Noche de celebración del Día de la Cultura Cubana en Jamaica.

Kingston, 19 October 2023. Convened by the Embassy of Cuba in Jamaica, with the support of the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic Industry (ICAIC), a screening of the Cuban film "El Mayor" took place as part of the celebrations for Cuban Culture Day in Jamaica.

The event, which took place at the Faculty of Humanities and Education of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, was attended by a high representation of the Cuban community living in Jamaica, as well as members of the accredited diplomatic and consular corps; members of the Cuban Solidarity Movement; diverse political organisations and social movements; students and professors of the UWI and collaborators of the Medical and Educational Brigade working in Jamaica.

In his introductory remarks, the Cuban Ambassador to Jamaica, Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, highlighted the relevance of this date for the Cuban people and the close relationship between culture and Revolution. He reaffirmed that the history of our country will continue to be told by its artists, despite the limitations imposed by the US economic, commercial and financial blockade and the inclusion of the island in the spurious and unilateral list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Maite Villoria Nolla, Head of the Department of Modern Languages and Literature at the UWI, provided a brief review of the film "El Mayor", highlighting its artistic values within the development of Cuban cinema.

A moment of great emotion was the intonation of the notes of the Bayamo Hymn, recalling the Mambises who sang it for the first time in the city of Bayamo 155 years ago.
