Ikaria has a tradition of solidarity and love for Cuba. It is called the Aegean Cuba or the red island, not only because of the reddish stones that abound at the site, but because of the presence in the late 40s of thousands of communists exiled during the dictatorship in Greece, who were part of the island and marked the lives of the locals forever with their ideas and their actions. It is also known since ancient times by the legend of Icarus, who on his flight with artificial wings fell on the island of Ikaria, to which he gives his name, and whose falling image with its shattered wings welcomes those who arrive at the port of Agios Kyrikos. With this trip by Cuban diplomats, with official and informal meetings with the people who love Cuba, as well as with the important cultural event, the deep friendship between the peoples of Cuba and Greece was reaffirmed once again.
