Geneva, August 28, 2026. The President of the Federation of University Students of Cuba (FEU), Litza Elena González Desdín, made statements to the press today at the headquarters of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The Cuban youth leader, who is also a Member of Parliament and a member of the Council of State, highlighted the important and active role played by young people and women in the Cuban Parliament, in a context marked by significant economic and social transformations, as well as the extreme escalation of the economic blockade and energy siege imposed by the Government of the United States, with brutal effects on Cuban families.
She spoke about the mobilization of young people, alongside the rest of the Cuban people, contributing to the search for creative solutions to address the challenges and difficulties facing the nation.
She stressed that young people account for nearly 30% of Cuban parliamentarians, twice the global average. With an average age of 46, the Cuban Parliament is one of the youngest in the world.
She also highlighted the important role played by young people in the drafting process of the new Code on Children, Adolescents and Youth, which was approved by the country last year.
She further recalled that Cuba is the second country in the world with the highest percentage of women parliamentarians, with women accounting for 57.4% of the 470 members of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP), a figure well above the global average of 27%.
In response to questions from the press, Litza Elena noted that her election as a member of the ANPP in 2025, at just 21 years of age, is a tangible demonstration of the genuine priority given in Cuba to the views and contributions of young people.
