Vientiane, August 15, 2025. The Cuban Embassy in Lao PDR hosted a moving evening to celebrate the 99th birthday of the historic leader of the Revolution and Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro and to inaugurate the commemoration of his centennial, which will culminate in December 2026.
Fidel Castro's extraordinary and multidimensional work was addressed in a eulogy featuring Cuban Ambassador Enna Viant Valdés, Deputy Director of the Europe and Americas Department of the Foreign Relations Commission of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, Singhanakone Syhalat, and Vice President of the Phongkeo Langsy Friendship Association. The ceremony highlighted the relevance of Castro's philosophy in various areas, such as foreign policy and its principles in defense of the sovereignty and independence of peoples, internationalism, solidarity, and his contribution to cooperation in various fields, including education.
It was a very emotional and fruitful evening, with audiovisual materials related to the leader's revolutionary work presented, and opportunities for dialogue and exchange with Party leaders, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Sports, professors and students from the Lao National University, the friendship association, and a representative of the group of graduates on the island of Cuba, representing Cuban collaboration.
The occasion was opportune to bid farewell to the young generation of Lao students who will pursue various specialties at Cuban universities in the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year.
In the words of one emotional student who shared unforgettable experiences during her stay in Havana, Fidel is present in each graduated Lao student and collaboratiob project accomplished.
The diplomat praised Fidel's legacy and imprint, which has formed the basis for continuing to strengthen and expand the strategic relations of friendship and cooperation between the two Parties, governments, and people of Cuba and Laos.
