The Embassy of Cuba in Kenya hosted an emotional commemorative event to mark the centenary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, historic leader of the Cuban Revolution.
The commemoration, as part of the activities honoring the 100th anniversary, was held at the Kenyan diplomatic representation in Nairobi, and was attended by diplomats from different countries, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Kenya–Cuba Friendship Association.
At the opening of the ceremony Ambassador Ines Fors Fernandez highlighted the life of Fidel Castro as a revolutionary leader whose impact transcended geographical and linguistic borders and whose legacy remains a vital reference point for the Cuban Revolution as it confronts today’s challenges. The Cuban diplomat emphasized that, 100 years after his birth, Fidel’s historical legacy remains closely linked to the defense of Cuba’s sovereignty, independence and dignity, as well as a conception of social justice that placed the human being at the center of the priorities of the Revolution.
During the event, the feature film "Fidel is Fidel" by renowned Cuban filmmaker and cinematographer Roberto Chile was presented. The film compiles moments of a life dedicated to Cuba including Fidel’s legacy associated with independence, sovereignty, social justice, solidarity and the conviction that a better world is possible.
The commemorative evening provided a space for tribute and for reaffirming the bonds of brotherhood between the two peoples. Through their testimonies, participants highlighted the continued relevance of Fidel Castro’s political, social, and humanist thought.
