Suva, May 23, 2026. - Cuban ambassador to Fiji, Néstor Torres, held a productive working meeting with Rosi Doviverata, president of the Fiji Media Association (FMA) and acting editor of the Fiji Sun newspaper.
The main objective of the meeting was to strengthen the visibility of the Caribbean island in the Pacific region and explore initiatives for cultural, social, and media collaboration. During the meeting, they reviewed the milestones in bilateral relations between the two nations, which were formally established on July 19, 2002, and consolidated with the opening of the Cuban Embassy in Suva in 2017. Likewise, Cuba’s role as a Dialogue Partner of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) since 2013 was highlighted, serving eleven countries in the region concurrently from its diplomatic headquarters in Suva.
The Cuban ambassador emphasized that the fundamental pillar of Cuban cooperation with Fiji and the Pacific lies in solidarity and mutual support as island states, as well as in health and human resources development, manifested through the deployment of medical brigades and the awarding of scholarships. In this context, the value of the Cuban community residing in the country as a living bridge of friendship was underscored, as well as the excellent reception of iconic products such as rum and tobacco.
With the aim of promoting Cuba’s cultural richness and strengthening ties of friendship, the Head of Mission and the Fijian media representative discussed a list of joint projects and initiatives for next July, when another anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations will be celebrated. Likewise, Néstor Torres provided an update on the current situation in Cuba amid the current context of extreme pressure from the U.S. government.
