Dublin, November 16, 2018. With the assistance of representatives of several dozens of countries and leaders of pacifist movements, the First International Conference against the military bases of the United States and NATO was inaugurated in Dublin.
The speakers of this inaugural session coincided in highlighting the hundreds of billions of dollars that are spent annually on weapons, being diverted from key sectors such as education, health and food. The gap between rich and poor deepens.
The mass media silence the existence of foreign military bases scattered around the world. It is hidden from public opinion as even civilian planes make travel through European airports and other latitudes hundreds of thousands of soldiers transferred to the war zones.
This conference has the great challenge of agreeing on an action plan that will mobilize international public opinion and build a great global alliance that aims at the elimination of all military bases, the preservation of peace and the diversion of large financial resources that are used for war, to combat poverty and preserve the environment.
Cuba is represented in this conference by Silvio Platero Yrola, president of the Cuban Movement for Peace and the Sovereignty of the Peoples. Also Aleida Guevara March, daughter of the eternal Commander Che Guevara, attends this event as a special guest.
Platero in his speech before the plenary moved the greeting of the Cuban people and the renewal of its determination in favor of disarmament and world peace. He denounced the reinforcement of the Yankee military bases deployed in Latin America and the Caribbean with the complicity of right-wing governments, contrary to the spirit of the 2014 proclamation in Havana of our region as a Zone of Peace, contrary to the spirit and aspiration of the peoples of our region. Cuba will march to the forefront with the continental movements to expel those military bases from our lands.
