Foreign Minister of Ghana reaffirms strength of ties with Cuba

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, Hon. Mrs. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, received the Ambassador of Cuba, Pedro Luis Despaigne Gonzalez, at the Foreign Ministry's headquarters.

The Minister, also a member of the Ghanaian Parliament, and who in the last September made an official visit to Cuba, expressed her satisfaction with the results achieved, and especially the quality of the meetings held with the Cuban leaders. She also said that she and the delegation that accompanied her felt the warmth and friendship of the authorities and people of Cuba.

The head of Ghanaian diplomacy indicated her country's interest in continuing to strengthen bilateral ties, especially in the field of economic cooperation.

The Cuban Ambassador thanked the Minister for Ghana's support to Cuba against the blockade, on which she ratified that her country will maintain its historic position against it.

During the meeting a balance of topics of bilateral interest was also taken, including the arrival in 2019 of the 60 years of diplomatic relations, and the graduation that same year in Cuba of more than 200 young Ghanaians in the specialty of Medicine, moment that the Minister described as significant for her country.

The Minister was accompanied at the meeting by the Deputy Minister, Mr. Mohammad Habibu Tijani; the Director of the Americas Bureau, Mrs. Florence Akonor; and her Deputy Director, Mrs. Mayfair Adomako-Mensah, among other officials of that Ministry. For the Embassy of Cuba, the First Secretary, Julio César Sánchez, participated.
