THE FOREIGN MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF GHANA EXPRESSED HIS GRATITUDE FOR CUBA'S VOTE IN FAVOR OF THE HISTORIC RESOLUTION PRESENTED TO THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

Accra, April 13. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, received the Cuban Ambassador to this capital, Julio Enrique Pujol Torres, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters.

The Foreign Minister thanked Cuba for its vote in favor of the historic resolution presented to the UN General Assembly, sponsored by Ghana, which declares the transatlantic slave trade to be the most serious crime against humanity in history—a resolution that seeks justice and highlights the need for reparations for Africa. The resolution was adopted on March 25 with 123 countries in favor and only three opposing it: the United States, Israel, and Argentina.

For his part, the Cuban Ambassador reiterated his country’s firm commitment to stand with Ghana and Africa as a whole in this just and necessary endeavor. He also thanked Ghana for its consistent support of Cuba against the blockade imposed by the United States more than 64 years ago, a stance further reflected in the message delivered to the UN General Assembly by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.

Cuba and Ghana maintain a long and historic relationship of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation dating back to 1959, when diplomatic relations were established—Ghana being the first African country to do so—driven by Founding Father Kwame Nkrumah and Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.
