Kingston, Jamaica, 25 November 2020. Jamaican news site WiredJa –viewed by more than two million users in the English-speaking Caribbean–, Our Today – a Kingston-based INS– and Sunday Sun –the official newspaper of Jamaica’s opposition People's National Party – published this week the article "Solidarity and Internationalism: Fidel Castro's flags", a tribute from its authors - the prominent Cuban historian René González Barrios and the Counsellor of the Embassy of Cuba in Jamaica, Ricardo Calvo Águila - to the Commander in Chief of the Cuban Revolution, on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of his passing.
The article highlights Fidel's ability to fully understand the humanistic essence of solidarity and internationalism, and to put them into practice, based on his deep knowledge of history and his extraordinary and exciting experiences as head of the Revolution.
The authors state that, after establishing diplomatic relations, Jamaica and Cuba began a beautiful tradition of cooperation that continues to this day. Many young Jamaicans studied or are studying in any of the four schools donated by the Cuban people and government; almost a thousand have graduated from higher education institutions in Cuba; more than half the Jamaican population has been attended by a Cuban doctor at least once, and currently some 100 teachers and more than 400 Cuban healthcare professionals serve in Jamaica under bilateral cooperation agreements. For this reason, even though Fidel is no longer physically among us, his legacy and presence can still be felt.
