Kingston, Jamaica, 8 January 2022. Few dates are more loaded with significance for the progressive forces in our America than the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. Aware of this and defying the rain and heavy traffic in Kingston, the friends of Cuba in Jamaica gathered at our Embassy yesterday afternoon to celebrate the 63rd anniversary of the victory of the revolutionary forces against Batista’s tyranny and the triumphal arrival of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro and his comrades in struggle in Havana.
Present at the meeting, whose audience was limited to a small number of people in observance of local Covid-19 protocols, were some thirty members of the solidarity movement with Cuba in Jamaica, the resident Cuban community and the State Mission’s staff.
In his speech, Professor Trevor Brown, president of the Jamaica Cuba Friendship Association, reflected on the example that the Revolution represents for the oppressed peoples in the world, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean, confronted for decades by the US hegemony. He also highlighted Cuba’s achievements in fighting Coronavirus, inside and outside its national borders.
For his part, the historian Osvaldo Cárdenas, president of the Association of Cuban Residents in Jamaica ‘Antonio Maceo Grajales’, reviewed the heroic achievements of the Cuban people in Revolution, despite the constant blockade and imperialist aggressions against it.
The new Cuban Ambassador-designate in Jamaica, Fermín Quiñones, thanked friends for their attendance and the support provided to our country in fighting Covid-19 and against the destabilization plans promoted by the United States and its allies during 2021. He also praised the historical relations of solidarity and cooperation between Cuba and Jamaica, and expressed the will of our country to continue deepening and strengthening them.
Before concluding, a chapter of the documentary series "The War on Cuba" was screened to participants, which summarizes the challenges faced by the Cuban people in recent months in their fight against two pandemics: the coronavirus and the US government’s hostility.
