Oslo, February 24, 2022. The Annual Meeting of the Norway-Cuba Friendship Association ended with the presentation of the book “Norwegian Sailors in Cuba. Stories about Norwegian shipping in Latin America over 150 years”, by its author, Terje Enger. In this way, a special tribute was paid to one of the most relevant figures in the history of the Association, highly respected and admired by all.
The book is a kind of autobiography of Terje Enger, who, as a sailor in his youth, had the opportunity to visit Cuba and was captivated. In fact, at some point he thought of staying to join the liberation struggle that was being waged on the Island and, being only 21 years old and on board of a Norwegian ship anchored in the Port of Havana where he was enrolled as a machinist, he lived with emotion the triumph of the Revolution on January 1st., 1959, and Fidel's victorious entry into that city seven days later.
The reader can then realize that in those passages lies the genesis of Terje Engen's commitment to Cuba, which over the years became imperishable. His feelings of solidarity and appreciation towards Fidel, the Revolution and the Cuban people led him to become one of the founders of the Norway-Cuba Friendship Association as early as 1964 and, some years later, its President for a long period doing an outstanding job. Likewise, he was the editor in chief of “New Cuba”, the magazine of the Organization, until his retirement in 2021.
The Embassy joins the tribute to Terje Enger. Thanks for everything, dear friend! (Embacuba Noruega)
