Friendship Association Sri Lanka - Cuba commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the Cuban Revolution

SRI LANKA, February 1, 2019.- The Ambassador of Cuba, Juana Elena Ramos Rodríguez, attended yesterday afternoon the solemn event organized by the Sri Lanka - Cuba Friendship Association in commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Cuban Revolution and the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries.

The Ambassador of Cuba in her speech denounced the new threat of the United States government to implement Title III of the Helms Burton Act, which would dangerously reinforce the blockade against Cuba and would constitute a flagrant violation of international law and affecting the sovereignty of the countries. She also commented on the holding of the constitutional referendum on February 24.

The various speakers who took the floor highlighted the work of the Cuban Revolution, as well as the validity of the thought of the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro Ruz.

The Member of Parliament and President of the Sri Lanka - Cuba Friendship Association, Dinesh Gunawardena, expressed on behalf of the Association their rejection of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba and reiterated their eternal solidarity with the Cuban people.

The occasion was also propitious to pay homage to our National Hero José Martí, on the occasion of the 166th Anniversary of his birth. In this context, Dinesh Gunawardena informed that the Municipal Council of Colombo had approved, unanimously, the placement of a bust of Martí in the Sri Lankan capital.

Other members of parliament, leaders of different political parties, and members of the Association of Graduates, local media,  and other friends of Cuba also attended the meeting.
