Fruitful exploring business visit to Cuba by UWI Faculty of Medical Sciences.

A very representative delegation from the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI Cave Hill Campus, did an exploratory trip to Cuba facilitated by the Cuban Ambassador in Barbados, Francisco Fernández and the Cuban Chamber of Commerce in Havana. Dr. Madhuvanti Murphy, Head, Public Health Group, said that the purpose of the trip was to identify potential areas of collaboration between the Faculty of Medical Sciences, the Chronic Disease Research Centre / Caribbean Institute for Health Research, and agencies in Cuba related to the three broad objectives: Researching the use of wound healing drugs in diabetics in Barbados; Post-graduate and undergraduate student exchange opportunities in training and research; Accessing mortality data to conduct comparative analyses on social determinants. After this successful visit, ambassador Fernández met again with the Barbadian delegation, also comprised by Dr. Natasha Sobers-Grannum, Lecturer in Public Health & Epidemiology; Dr. Alafia Samuels, Director, CDRC/CAIHR & Deputy Dean, Graduate Studies and Research; and Dr. Selvi Jeyaseelan, Research Consultant. The first concrete result has been a draft Memorandum of Understanding presented by the Faculty to be signed together with the Cuban Ministry of Health, which will be the base for the further cooperation.
