Havana, July 4th, 2023.- Deputy Prime Minister Inés María Chapman welcomed the meeting of ministers and top authorities of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation from the Group of 77 and China, this Tuesday.
The meeting, which is taking place at Hotel Nacional de Cuba, is part of the 14th Convention on Environment and Development, whose debates will focus on the impact of climate change on biodiversity, the economy, society, food security, and health, with severe consequences that require the attention and cooperation of this integration bloc.
Venezuelan Science and Technology Minister Gabriela Jiménez noted the side effects of global warming on the most vulnerable sectors, such as indigenous communities, women, and young people in Latin America, a region severely affected by this process; and called on them to become protagonists of actions to preserve nature.
The G-77 and China should seek alternatives to promote infrastructures and programs that will allow the member countries to face the challenges posed by the consequences of climate change by using science, technology, and innovation, and the support of financial institutions and the private sector, Jiménez added.
Cuba is hosting this meeting as the Chair of the G-77 and China. The aim is to adopt a final declaration to fight climate change, land degradation, and pollution, and protect biodiversity.
