New York, June 19th, 2023.- Cuba considered today that the adoption of the Marine Biodiversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction treaty (BBNJ), meant a victory of the developing nations and it was a demonstration that unity and multilateralism are more necessary than ever to humankind to face the current and future challenges.
Ambassador Yuri Gala López, Chargé d´Affaires a.i. referred, on behalf of G77 and China, to the support of the international community to the ratification campaign to guarantee the rapid entry into force of the treaty.
Furthermore, the Cuban diplomat highlighted the essential mobilization of resources guaranteeing the essential support for developing countries to create the required capacities for them to ratify the instrument.
Gala López emphasized as transcendent the inclusion of the principle of common heritage of humankind in the final agreement, which is a fundamental conception that needs to be rooted in every action in the high seas, including scientific research activity.
Cuba is honoured to have led the Group of 77 and China during the challenging negotiations last March, preceded by 10 year negotiations, that resulted in this ambitious and progressive historical agreement, a landmark in the conservation and sustainable use of ocean life and ecosystems.
